SELLING AT A CARLISLE EVENT
If you’re going to sell at a Carlisle Car Show,
you’re going to need a space or a car corral spot.
Getting a vender or car corral space for most events is
simply a mater of calling Carlisle events at 717-243-7855
however, the Spring, Fall, and Corvette shows are a different
beast. The way Carlisle spaces are handled for all shows
is, once you acquire a space ($95), you have the right
to renew your scace(s) every year. If you don’t
renew, then your space becomes available for someone else.
Because most shows do not cover the entire Fairgrounds,
there is always room to expand the show and you can simply
call and get a space. These spaces may not always be the
best. The best spaces are in the center of the event and
near the gates.
Because the Spring and Fall shows cover the entire Fairgrounds,
all the vender spaces are taken. Because the vender spaces
are so lucrative, no one ever “gives up” their
spaces. Instead, they sublease the rights to their spaces
for often over $1000 per space. Recently, Carlisle Productions
“caught up with this practice” and created
rules around transferring and subleasing spaces. To officially
transfer the rights to renewal of spaces, it must go through
Carlisle Productions. The cost is $500 per space for the
Spring, Fall, and Corvette events. For all other events,
it’s $250 per space. All subleasing of a space must
go though Carlisle Productions and it appears it will
cost the lessee 50% of their rental income. I suggest
you contact Carlisle Productions to verify the rules around
this. Going around these rules and leasing without the
knowledge of Carlisle Productions could result in the
loss of the leaser’s right to their spaces.
To summarize, if you want a vender space for Spring,
Fall, or Corvette Carlisle, you will have to find someone
willing transfer or lease their space and it’s going
to cost you. To get a space at the other shows, you can
call for a space but they are not always the best. To
get good spaces, you put your name on a waiting list and
if something comes up and your next on the list, you get
the space, no extra charge.
The Car Corral operates a little different. To get a
car corral space, I’m always told to report to the
main office when I get to the Fairgrounds and apply at
that time. When you walk in the main office, you are given
two options. You can usually get an undesirable space
right away. These spaces are usually on the far edges
and corners of the car corral. If you’ve got a really
popular car that sells it’s self, these spaces may
be all right, but if you are selling a less popular model,
you need exposure and these spaces don’t provide
that. Your other option is wait for a recycled space.
As sellers sell their car, they notify the main office.
The main office re-issues these spaces on a first come,
first serve basis. When they hit your name on the list,
they call it out over the loud speaker. Then you report
to the office, pay your $95 and you are in. This system
seems to work well but you might have to spend a day or
two waiting for your name to be called. My experience
is the loudspeaker system works well and you can hear
when your name is called.
I recently applied for a permanent car corral spaces
for both Spring and Fall events. I was put on a waiting
list and told it could take 6 months to 3 years to get
one. Because I do retain rights to vender spaces at other
Carlisle events, I was told I hold some seniority on the
list but it was not clear to me exactly how it worked.
It didn’t cost me anything so go on the waiting
list.
To sell on a vender space, you need to be selling car
related merchandise. You are not allowed to sell food
or alcohol. You may drink alcohol but if you act up, you
may be thrown out. You can’t sell weapons, fireworks,
or adult items. You can bring your pet but it needs to
be tied, under control, and you must clean up it’s
…. “stuff”. After you unload, unless
you have the space to park on your paid spaces, your vehicle
must go outside the show area. For most shows, parking
is available for free on the Fairgrounds. For Spring,
Fall, and Corvette, you’ll end up parking outside
the Fairgrounds. Carlisle Productions is not responsible
for any damage, vandalism, theft etc. You are supposed
to have a Pa. Sales tax license. Before the event, you
will receive a sticker for you vehicle, (1 per space)
and a walk in pass. The sticker on your vehicle allows
you and a partner entry every day.
To sell in the car corral, you must be selling a car
on the space, no parts. The car must move under it’s
own power or be towed in by another car which is in the
corral. You may only unload cars on the Fairgrounds during
set-up days. I’ve personal noticed un-operable project
cars on trailers in the corral but I’m guessing
they were brought in during set-up.
At Spring, Fall, and the Corvette events, the only way
you could stay at the event over night is if you have
the room for a RV or tent on your space. Showers are available
in most bathrooms at the Fairgrounds. Otherwise, you will
need find lodging in the area. I suggest going to www.blablabla.com.
At other shows, camping spaces are available outside of
the show, in the Fairgrounds at a cost of $15 per 10’x
30’ space. You’ll need to register for these
in advance.
